Love is difficult

Sunday, February 18th, 2007

I was watching Brothers & Sisters and they quoted Rainer Maria Rilke. I fell in love with it. :)

It is also good to love: because love is difficult. For one human being to love another human being: that is perhaps the most difficult task that has been entrusted to us, the ultimate task, the final test and proof, the work for which all other work is merely preparation. That is why young people, who are beginners in everything, are not yet capable of love: it is something they must learn. With their whole being, with all their forces, gathered around their solitary, anxious, upward-beating heart, they must learn to love.

If you would like to read the whole letter, go here. Total poetry. Lovely, simply lovely.

Well written and true

Any one who is or has been married knows that this wonderful article about marriage (written from a guy’s perspective) is as close to the truth as you get. It really isn’t a melding of minds into one, as you’re led to believe. There are not 24-7 displays of mushy gushy lovey stuff. The stuff that means the most is the little things, like remembering your spouse’s drink of choice or telling people how great s/he is at his/her job or being a dad/mom or doing whatever s/he does in his/her spare time. That, my friends, is love. So, for those that follow the hollywood rules of marriage, you might want to reconsider. Marriage is rough and tumble, but definitely worth it.

And let the holidays begin

Tuesday, October 11th, 2005

In my life, it seems like non-stop holiday/birthday stuff starting in October with my in-laws birthdays & Halloween until January with Zacky’s birthday. This year is revving up to be a really busy year with my brother-in-law possibly heading to Iraq in December. It’s a juggling act when it comes to family all meeting and for which holidays. I remember when I was a kid and holidays/birthdays were just fun fun fun. Now they seem more prep and planning than enjoying. I guess I shouldn’t complain too loudy considering I have the means to celebrate and people to celebrate with.

The perfect proposal

Look, I guarantee there’ll be tough times. I guarantee that at some time, one or both of us is gonna want to get out of this thing. But I also guarantee that if I don’t ask you to be mine, I’ll regret it for the rest of my life, because I know, in my heart, you’re the only one for me.

Filched from Runaway Bride, which I am watching right now. Really, in this day and age of quicky marriages/divorces, it wouldn’t do us much harm to have this tattooed on our hearts when we get married. Marriage isn’t always easy. It’s not always roses and sweet nothings. I know I’ve said this before on my site. The more I think about it, the more I believe it. I think I’m going to say the above quote (paraphrased, of course) to Jayson when we renew our vows. We’ve decided to renew them on our 10 year anniversary. Yeah, it’s not much time, but by then we’ll only be 29! ;)
