Shattered Sun

And I’m drinking a Mike’s Hard Cranberry Lemonade. Very delish but not as nice without friends around. I enjoy drinking so much more on a social level. Not that one alcoholic beverage can really be considered drinking but you know what I mean. I’m also killing things in World of Warcraft, which I don’t get to do as much as I’d like. Anyway, I ramble… I’m off to bed soon and maybe I’ll post some more photos tomorrow.

A local high school here in Arizona is having a problem with an english teacher assigning Jake, Reinvented as an assignment. The parents figure that the themes in the book are too risque to be dealt with in the classroom. However, this book is published for the teen sector and marketed thusly. Personally, I don’t think it’s a big deal.  I think the big deal is instead that we are choosing to take away from a story when it doesn’t even come close to what our kids are being shown in the media.  It’s just a bandaid if we’re taking books away.  This is the same type of bandaid that parents use in their arguments that video games are evil.  Come on people.  Listen up and get real here.  The real problem isn’t a story where teens are talking about what’s really going on in the high school.  It’s simply that the book is an easier target to attack than the media as a whole.

Personally, I’m going to head to the library at some point and check out Jake, Reinvented.  And hopefully, the poor teacher who was reprimanded for using this book in her lessons will have other parents come to her aid and tell her that she’s doing just fine.

Seriously, does it?  Yes, it’s unethical and completely showy.  On the other hand, it’s politics and do you really expect anything less from that type of crowd?  I believe that government works and for the most part, it works well.  However, I don’t believe the campaign promises, etc.  And you shouldn’t either.  Past experience should show almost anyone that few (if any) politicians keep their promises once elected.  Sometimes I think it’s because of others in Washington and sometimes, it’s because the lifestyle there is so alluring.  Where else can you serve and get an extremely good paycheck, benefits, and retirement?  And the raises they keep voting for themselves are pretty awesome.  But I digress.

Clinton planted a question in one of her meet & greets a week or so ago.  And while it’s unethical, I don’t think it really bears much on what’s going on.  She wanted to talk about the environment & global warming.  Maybe it wasn’t on the young man’s mind.  Maybe it was.  Maybe he just needed a push or the right words to paraphrase.  We won’t really know.  And I’m sure this has happened before and it’ll happen again.  This isn’t a new trick at all.  I think it completely got blown out of proportion.

On a side note, I’m not likely to be voting for Clinton at this point.  I thought McCain was my choice, but he’s lost a lot of momentum and I don’t think he’ll have the staying power he needs at that level.  He makes one heck of a Senator though!

On another tangent:  Why can’t they take all the money their raising for their campaigns and put it to good use where it really matters?  With all the people in need in the United States alone, you’d think they’d get their priorities straight and perhaps leave a more lasting legacy other than a string of advertisements.

I wasn’t at work today and now I’m lying in bed typing this out on my phone. I could’ve done it from my computer but I just wanted to curl up in bed. Just got tired of being in charge, ya know? It was a nice ploy except that some comment systems don’t make it easy to comment from my phone. It’s a general unhappiness with Windows Mobile, I think. Have I mentioned how much I love my Moto Q? I really love the keyboard. The only thing I dislike is the goofy times that I have to restart it for no apparent reason. Anyway, I’m off to bed. Well, I’m off to sleep.

J’s dad flew into Phoenix today. In a two seater plane. We left my work at 4 to get up there in time to meet him at the Glendale Airport. We haven’t seen him in five or six years now. I know, that’s a long time but life gets in the way sometimes. As I’ve mentioned before, I haven’t been back to Texas to see my family since 2000. There’s just never enough money it seems. Anyway, the evening was fun, I’ll admit. And now, I’m bushed, so I think I’ll head to bed.
