It’s all about the wiring

No two kids with autism are exactly alike, but all types of autism share a common trait: “We’re talking about a fundamental difference in wiring,” says Fred Volkmar, M.D., a child psychiatrist and autism researcher at Yale and the author of Healthcare for Children on the Autism Spectrum.

Lost Boys: Autism and My Son is an incredibly good read if you really want to know some of the things we go through with our little Zacky. Hopefully they won’t take this down anytime soon as it is extremely informative and well written. And best of all, it’s coming from a parent’s view point, which you don’t find a lot. Well, at least not a lot that are this eloquent.

Oh my…that was some good reading there. I’m glad you found that, it opened my eyes up a little more about Zack’s world. Thank you.

Pretty interesting stuff. :) I love when I find good articles like that. :D

I had no idea Zacky was autistic. Check out our resource site disabilitycompass.org

He’s not officially autistic. As a matter of fact, we’re waiting for the official write up of his test results but the informal results label him so borderline that he’s not going to get the tag after all. He’s too social. Granted, he’s social because we’ve worked with him a lot, but it’s still significant enough that while he shows many many signs, he’s only going to be labeled as OCD, ADHD, and Lack of Anger Management. But many of the ways that you help an autistic child are still going to help him a lot, so that’s part of the route we’re taking in his therapy. Thanks for the resource, I’m bookmarking it! :)
