The current “it” thing

Ten years ago, it seemed like everyone I knew online wanted to be the next big thing in Web Designing. If you had a computer and some WYSIWYG editor, you were golden to make a million dollars.

Five years ago, it seemed like everyone was trying to make a buck off the advertisements on their blogs. Then it was the ideal to become a blog that got a million comments and visits because that meant the money was sure to follow.

This year it feels like everyone is starting a photography business. Everyone has access to those cool cameras that aren’t quite professional and aren’t quite amateur. Plus with the boon of cool sites like Flickr, we can all have our egos stroked and boosted til we really do think we’re ready to take that leap. Yep, the money trend is definitely in the photography now.

Maybe I’m a bit behind in the times and these aren’t what the world as a whole is seeing online. I just know that the group of people I’ve followed over the years are heading that way. I can’t tell you how many people I wish to emulate that have done the whole web designer to blogger to photographer cycle.

It makes you wonder though, what happens when you turn a hobby into a career and you get tired of it? Where do you find that next creative outlet and when do you learn that maybe you shouldn’t turn your hobbies into careers?
