Sam got locked in the bathroom today

Friday, March 24th, 2006

What are the odds of that?! There’s a deadbolt on two of the bathrooms at work. Sam went with me to work and then needed to go to the bathroom. I’m thinking “no problem, just remind him to lock the door because anyone could just walk in” and then he’d be right back. Except he wasn’t right back. So I go looking for him (it’d only been about 10 minutes) and find him still locked in the bathroom. So one of my coworkers tells me that the lock sticks! And no one thought that it would be good to fix that? So after much trying by most everyone, the head honcho of the office comes to find me and finds out what’s going on. How embarrassing! Needless to say, I was grateful when someone finally found a key to unlock it from the outside and all was well again. But now Sam is teasing me and my coworkers are telling me that I must really have it out for him since I drugged him and then locked him in the bathroom! I know they all mean it in jest and I took it that way, but you know, if someone overheard and didn’t know the backstory, that might get a little awkward.

To top all that off, Zacky went flying off the handle today at his after school program. I mean, really off. So far off, in fact, that they almost suspended him except that I talked the head of the program and the teacher who was working with Zacky to reconsider. If he does it again, he’s suspended though. :( I think it’s partially from all the stuff yesterday (he’s a really sensitive kid) and partially because we’re in the process of changing his meds this week. Poor kid. And worse, I had to punish him because he has to learn to take a step back and think about his actions. It might not cause him to stop them but maybe it’ll help him tone it down a bit.

I tell you, I love being a mother, but sometimes, I’m pretty certain I’m doing a sucky job at it.

I’ve got good news…

Thursday, March 23rd, 2006

…and I’ve got bad news.

Good news is that I got complimented for doing my job well at work. And not by the people I work with but by the customers. That’s worth a lot to me.

Bad news is that Sam went to the emergency room because he took one of Joey’s pills by mistake. Then he took one of his pills but didn’t tell anyone because he thought he’d get into trouble. Then he went to school and pretty much slept for 4 hours before the school bothered to call me at work. Then I get there to get him to the ER and the nurse reams me for 10 minutes about how I’m a crummy parent because I should’ve had Joey’s pill container way out of reach and not on my desk. Then I get to the ER, go through four IVs before one holds, an EKG, heart monitoring, blood pressure monitoring, and a phone that just won’t work inside. Then I finally get done and realize that I am completely beat to death.

Special thanks (of course) goes to Rachel & Darren for being so wonderful and picking up Zacky after school while all this was going on. They definitely went above and beyond. And tomorrow, I get to do the whole work thing while watching Sam. It should be interesting. I’m not a big fan of taking children into the work place, but I don’t feel comfortable leaving him at home and there’s no way I’ll find a baby sitter for it. So off to work we go!

And on that note, I’m going to bed. :|

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Wednesday, March 22nd, 2006

The Good: This guy is walking across America and dropping pounds in the process. It’s a great idea but I’m glad it’s him and not me! Could you just imagine the blisters and chafing? Owie!

The Bad: Herion is quickly becoming an out of control problem here in Arizona. It’s not helping when the dealers are using their own kids to deliver the goods. It’s just gross. Ten year olds shouldn’t know a thing about drugs, much less be handling them. I hope these jerks get everything the law can throw at them. :(

The Ugly: The so-called Botox Bandit really wanted to look beautiful at a cheap price. In fact, at no price. She ran into a local Scottsdale spa, got some lovely injections and then split without paying. Just creepy, I tell ya.

Fuzzy Posters and photo editing

Tuesday, March 21st, 2006

You know, I’ve never colored a Fuzzy Poster before yesterday. It’s very nice! I mean, you can make errors, but they aren’t as easy to make. It reminded me of photo editing (I know, that’s a bit of a leap but try to follow). With digital photography, once you start editing the image, it’s all very forgiving. I mean, you can still take a just plain rotten shot, but you’re more likely to be able to salvage whatever it is you were trying to achieve. I like that. I’m pretty crummy with photographs, but if you let me edit them, it makes my shots look ten times better. Do you think a lot of people are doing this now? Makes me wonder how many people are out there truly just amazing photographers and how many are just like me. Ordinary and such, but maybe they’ve got better digital editing skills.

Is Whole Foods Wholesome?

Monday, March 20th, 2006

I really do love Whole Foods. Truly. Just ask anyone. But I can’t shop there. Why, you might ask? Well, to quote this article:

Charges of elitism—media wags, in otherwise flattering profiles, have called Whole Foods “Whole Paycheck” and “wholesome, healthy for the wholesome, wealthy”—are the only criticism of Whole Foods that seems to have stuck

That is exactly why I draw the line. I don’t mind the tattoos, piercings, and wild hair. And, organic or not, when I’m looking for something “natural”, Whole Foods usually has the item that fits the bill. But for regular shopping, I simply can’t afford it. And most people I know complain about the same thing. I don’t begrudge Whole Foods their right to prosper. I’m sure they do wonderful being a boutique. But for the simple middle class person trying to make ends meet, it’s just not worth it. Give me Safeway any day.
