Is Whole Foods Wholesome?
Monday, March 20th, 2006I really do love Whole Foods. Truly. Just ask anyone. But I can’t shop there. Why, you might ask? Well, to quote this article:
Charges of elitism—media wags, in otherwise flattering profiles, have called Whole Foods “Whole Paycheck” and “wholesome, healthy for the wholesome, wealthy”—are the only criticism of Whole Foods that seems to have stuck
That is exactly why I draw the line. I don’t mind the tattoos, piercings, and wild hair. And, organic or not, when I’m looking for something “natural”, Whole Foods usually has the item that fits the bill. But for regular shopping, I simply can’t afford it. And most people I know complain about the same thing. I don’t begrudge Whole Foods their right to prosper. I’m sure they do wonderful being a boutique. But for the simple middle class person trying to make ends meet, it’s just not worth it. Give me Safeway any day.
