I'd suggest telling them that you can only realistically go to one place or the other. Choose one this time and go to the other next time. Hopefully they will understand, you're on a budget and have to live like it. Also, it is a vacation afterall, and you should be allowed to enjoy it without being stressed about so many long drives or putting yourself in financial jeapardy with the cost of a plane trip (or 2 or 3). - OR - Rent an RV and have a grand time touring the states you have to drive thru, and make the drive part of the vacation instead of feeling like the vacation is when you get there.
Well, part of that is my problem because there's nothing to do in Idaho and I'd like to do something fun other than visit my brother. That's a bit selfish of me, I know. :) It turns out that J probably can't get the time off to do it anyhow, so we're back to the drawing board, so to speak.

Suggestoin, what if you get a plane for the longest drive part and then find out about hiring a car for the days you need it.
We'd definitely have to do that if we flew anywhere. I could not see relying on my family/friends to be my taxi driver, ya know?
