Zacky’s Surgery Update
We took Zack in for another surgery today. Actually, it was the one that had been postponed from earlier this month when he was ill. Anyway, all went well or as well as could be expected. Sadly, we didn’t get the news we really wanted to hear. We’re told by his surgeon that his eardrum on the left side is extremely weak and elastic-like. This means that a normal ear infection just destroys the thing. And in the past month, Zack’s ear has worsened more rapidly than expected. His surgeon said that if the T-tube doesn’t work, then the next surgery will be drastic and there will be a significant loss of hearing. So much so that Zacky will most likely need a hearing aid in that ear.
Now we wait and see what these latest developments will mean.
On the other hand, Zack chose to not do gas for this surgery and just stayed awake while they did the IV in his arm. He looked at everything while they were doing it and didn’t cry once. They told us that they’ve never seen a 6 year old take it so extremely well. Usually they don’t stop giving the gas to children until they’re around 12, which is why this was an odd request but not one they haven’t heard before. I guess that a lot of children who go in for multiple surgeries start to hate the gas.
Anyway, long story short, he did well. I’ll keep you posted, as always.

Poor kid. I’m glad he is so brave about it, but I’m sure it must be heartbreak for all of you to have to go thru this. I hope things get better soon.

Modern hearing aids are so small that you don’t notice them, so don’t get discouraged. Hope he won’t be needing one, though.
