It’s not my fault you aren’t paying attention
Where I work, I pretty much get to find projecs to keep myself busy. One of those projects have been getting all our tax forms up to date. See, we have these binders where we maintain all the Arizona Department of Revenue 5005 forms. What this does is proves that certain entities that we sell to don’t have to pay sales tax to us for the items they buy. It’s basically a resale certificate. Anyhow, you have to have them on file or when you get audited by the ADR, they get you with lots of fines and such. Well, one company in aprticular kept sending me an incorrect form. It was missing the letter on the end. All tax privilage IDs are set as ##-######-A, with A being some letter. This company kept sending me forms missing the letter. Being the nice person I am, I decided to give them a call and ask for it since they obviously were missing the request in my letters to them.
The woman who answered the phone in accounting was a total grouch to me!
- Me: “Can you give me the letter that’s on the end of your tax privilege id please? It’s missing on my 5005.”
- Her: “What letter? There isn’t a letter on it.”
- Me: “Are you sure? Your company is the only company that I’ve ever seen without a letter.”
- Her: “I’ve been sending out this form for over a year now and no one ELSE has ever asked for a letter. Let me check, but I know there isn’t.”
- Me: “Thank you.”
- Her to coworker: “She thinks there’s a letter on the end of our id. (cue disbelief)”
- Her to me: “Oh. (pause) I guess there is a letter. It’s E.”
- Me: “Thanks. I’ll update my form.”
And that was it. No “Sorry for being a grump to you” or any other sort of apology. Somehow it was my fault for pointing out that she’d been sending out the form with an error for over a year and no one noticed before me. Sucks to be her but man, someone should send her to charm school or something.
