As with all doctor visits, you have good news and bad news. Today was an interesting mix of both. We found out that he hasn’t lost all hearing in his left ear. Removing the polyp did bring some of it back. We also found out that he has Cholesteatoma. Check out that google link and you’ll get a whole wealth of information plus some pictures you may not want to see!
He does have the max amount of conductive hearing loss you can have. The pressure in his ear is so strong that it has imploded everything into his middle ear. The mastoid cyst is eroding the bones in his ear and he’ll be having his middle ear bones completely replaced. The bone erosion is not as bad as it could be, but it’s still there.
The surgery will entail removing the cyst, cleaning all the “gunk” out of the ear and mastoid, reconstruction of the mastoid & ear drum, and some drilling. It’s slated for a two hour window, which is quite long for outpatient care. We do have to wait two weeks for the surgery to happen, but there are worse waits.
