Weekly Wrapup #71
What was the first music video you remember seeing? What was memorable? Hey Mickey by Toni Basil. I remember watching that and laughing my ass off! No other video ever has made me laugh so hard. Hehe…
What was your favorite music video as a teenager? Why? Hhhhmm… it was a Paula Abdul video… with a cartoon in it, lol! Shows how much I was really paying attention, eh?
How often did you watch MTV as a teen? How often now? Why has this changed, if at all? Hardly ever watched it since my father was a big believer in no TV in the house. Even after I moved with my mother I wasn’t a big fan of MTV. As for how often now… Once in a blue moon. It’s just that mostly now it’s not music and I find that annoying. And the shows on it are just lacking. There are one or two I don’t mind watching if I catch them, but I definitely don’t make an issue of it and think that I must see them.
Did “video kill the radio star,” as The Buggles asserted in their 1980 song of the same title? Why or why not? I think it did. I mean, look at all the old time singers. They didn’t have to be perfect or beautiful or fetching. They just had to sing. They could even have hideous personalities and we still loved them. Now, you can’t just be a singer. You have to be a singer and dancer and model, etc, etc. In a business built around selling yourself, if you have a mediocre voice, but look good, you’re just as likely to be able to market yourself enough to sell albums.
What is the best music video ever made? Why? The Change by Garth Brooks. They did the music video in honor of the Oklahoma City Bombing and it’s just amazing. Simplistic and touching and the live footage wasn’t overdone. It was all very tasteful and moving. A perfect tribute to the lives that were lost in that tragedy.
